Encourage remittance inflow thru’ legal channel: Imran

The expatriates' welfare minister on Tuesday urged the labour counsellors to enhance interaction with the migrant communities to motivate them to send remittance through legal channel.

He also said labour counsellors will have to work for the welfare of the migrant workers and will also have to explore job opportunities for the overseas job seekers.

Imran Ahmed, the minister for expatriates' welfare and overseas employment, was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural session of 'Labour Welfare Conference 2019' at the Probashi Kallyan Bhaban in the city.

The minister said if the workers send remittances through official channel, the inward remittance will increase notably.

The government is providing incentive to the migrant workers to increase remittance inflow, he added.

The workers should be aware of the benefit of sending remittance through formal channel.

Labour counsellors have to communicate with the workers and inspire them to send remittance home through legal way.

He also stressed the need for making a study of the demand of Bangladeshi workers in overseas job market.

Parliamentarian Anisul Islam Mahmud who was present as the special guest said migrant workers are contributing significantly to the country's economy. So, focus should be given on protecting their interests first.

Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA) president Benjir Ahmed alleged that a section of officials at the embassies are involved with manpower business that should be stopped.

It is imperative to bring transparency in the activities of the embassies, he added.

He also called for ensuring the labour counsellors' sincere role in creating jobs for migrants.

Labour welfare officials from different job destination countries attended the three-day conference.

Ahmed Munirus Saleheen, additional secretary of the expatriates' welfare ministry, delivered welcome address while Rownaq Jahan, secretary of the ministry, chaired the programme.
