SYLHET, Oct 31: The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) will extend all necessary assistance to the investors in setting up industries in Sylhet region to spur industrialisation, said its president Md Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin).

He said it is unfortunate that there had been no industrialisation in Sylhet although there are huge fallow lands in this region in addition to other facilities like gas.

There are huge potentials for setting up industrial units in different sectors like tourism and Agar, he added.

He called on entrepreneurs to come forward to accelerate the industrialisation in this region.

The FBCCI president was speaking as the chief guest at a reception accorded to former presidents and vice-presidents of the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) at its conference hall in the city on Tuesday.

SCCI president Khondaker Shiper Ahmed presided over the event.

FBCCI president Md Shafiul Islam also said different sectors of the country have seen remarkable advancements over the last few years and that the businesses made a significant contribution to these achievements.

He also said a number of internationally reputed institutions and organisations had lauded Bangladesh's progress and the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who made this possible.

According to reports by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and other international organisations, Bangladesh would be the 28th largest economy by 2024, said the FBCCI president.

Still, there are challenges in different sectors, he added.

Setting up potential industries in Sylhet region would surely contribute to the national economy, he said.

At the event, former SCCI presidents Md Safwan Chowdhury, Abdur Razzaque Chowdhury, Fokhor Uddin Ali Ahmed, Salah Uddin Ali Ahmed and Faruque Ahmed Misbah were honoured with crests.

On behalf of late former presidents Khondaker Abdul Malik, Abdus Salam Chowdhury, Md Mohiuddin Ahmed and MA Mumin, their family members received the crests.

Former vice-presidents Md Shah Alam, Zubayer Ahmed Chowdhury and Farid Ahmed were also honoured in recognition of their contribution to the SCCI.
