Fish prices go up on short supply

Prices of different varieties of fishes showed an upward trend in the city's kitchen markets on Friday.

Retailers said they had to purchase fishes at high rates from the wholesalers who attributed the price hike to the short supply of fishes.

Also, prices of different varieties of rice and some vegetables remained high.

Upset by sudden price hike of fishes, consumers called upon the government to ensure strict market monitoring so that unscrupulous traders cannot increase prices on a whim.

On Friday, ruhi fish was selling between Tk 280 and Tk 300 a kg depending on their size. The price ranged between Tk 250 and Tk 280 in the past few days.

Telapia fish was selling between Tk 150 and Tk 180 a kg depending on their size. The price range was Tk 120 to Tk 140 in the last week.

A small-sized hilsa cost between Tk 500 and Tk 600 while a medium-sized one was selling at a price range of Tk 800 to Tk 1200.

The price of hilsa has increased 11.11 per cent in the last one year, according to Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) market analysis report.

Meanwhile, coarse rice was selling at Tk 40 to Tk 45 a kg and the fine variety between Tk 60 and Tk 68.

Miniket rice was selling between Tk 60 and Tk 68 a kg depending on its quality.

Ordinary variety of paijam rice was selling between Tk 50 and Tk 52 a kg while the best quality between Tk 52 and Tk 55.

According to TCB, the prices of najirshail rice increased between 10.91 per cent and 16.67 per cent and paijam between Tk 7.37 per cent and 9.18 per cent depending on their quality in the last one year.

Onion (imported variety) was selling between Tk 35 and Tk 45 a kg while the local variety between Tk 45 and Tk 55 on Friday.

The prices of ginger, garlic and red meat remained the same as in the last week.

Beef was selling between Tk 480 and Tk 500 a kg while mutton between Tk 750 and Tk 800.

Broiler chicken was selling between Tk 140 and Tk 150 a kg and local variety between Tk 400 and Tk 450.

About market monitoring, a commerce ministry official told the FE that the monitoring activities were sometimes hampered due to inadequate number of monitoring teams and lack of logistics supports.
