Invest in power betting on developed nation prospects

PM’s adviser makes pitch at energy summit

Prime Minister's energy affairs adviser sought on Tuesday overseas investments in the power and energy sector to help achieve the goal of being a developed nation by 2041.

The country would require generating around 60,000 megawatts (mw) of electricity by then, said Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury.

Mr Chowdhury made the comments while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural session of a two-day 'Bangladesh Energy and Power Summit 2018' at a city hotel.

The government has planned to build three energy hubs in Moheshkhali, Pyra and Mongla to boost the country's overall electricity generation, he said.

Mr Chowdhury also stressed the need for increased use of renewable energy for the betterment of the environment while ensuring sustainable development.

Chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the ministry of power, energy and mineral resources Md Tazul Islam was the special guest at the inaugural session.

Energy sector experts, academics, economists and stakeholders from different countries along with multilateral development partners, multinational and local energy sector professionals took part in the discussion and shared their experiences.

WISPOL Group, an event management company of China, organised the event, while Energy and Power magazine facilitated it.

A wide range of issues including nuclear power development, Bangladesh LNG market and future prospects, LPG market and challenges were discussed in the session.
