The country's first job portal and app was launched on Sunday for migrant workers aiming to prevent middlemen from getting involved in the process of sending workers abroad.

International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Bdjobs.com have jointly created the portal and mobile app named 'Bdesh Jobs' to provide overseas jobseekers with necessary information about employment in different countries.

The launching ceremony was held at a city hotel where officials, migrant rights activists and experts, among others, were present. The platform will also help government-approved recruitment agencies get quick access to information about skilled workers.

Fahim Mashroor, chief executive officer of Bdjobs.com, said the platform will help make the manpower sector more transparent.

"It will also help reduce the migration cost and ensure hassle-free services for outbound workers."

IOM deputy head of mission Dimanche Sharon said this initiative is expected to help a great deal to jobseekers looking for reliable and safe ways to go abroad.

The government is committed to bringing discipline in the recruitment process, said Nasrin Jahan, joint secretary of the Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment.

The ministry is trying its best to minimise the expense of foreign recruitment, she added. "It also remains vigilant so that incidents of deception and cheating by unscrupulous recruitment agents can be strictly controlled."
