BSTI revokes licence for seven cos

Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution or BSTI has cancelled licences for seven food companies that featured on a list of 52 products identified as substandard. It has also suspended permission for production of 18 other brands, according to a media release issued on Wednesday.

Padma Bank launches lucrative deposit schemes

Padma Bank Limited has launched one of the most lucrative deposit schemes prevailing in the banking sector of the country. Under the scheme, a client will see his deposit getting a three-fold hike if he keeps the money in any branch of the bank for nine years, said a press release on Wednesday. In addition, the client will be able to borrow up 80 per cent from his deposited amount. The scheme could be opened individually or jointly. Dr Mahmuda Alam Mita and Golam Mohammad Musa became the first two customers to open the three-fold deposit scheme in the principal branch of Padma Bank on Tuesday. They were greeted by senior officials including the bank's CEO and Managing Director Md Ehsan Khasru. — BSS

Construction of Khulna Hi-Tech Park begins in July

Construction work of Khulna Hi-Tech Park in Rupsha area, Khulna will begin in July this year. The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Ministry has taken the initiative to construct the Hi-Tech Park at an estimated cost of Tk 1.54 billion on 4.15 acres of land with a view to making educated youths employed, said official sources. "The government had taken an initiative about 10 years back to construct the Hi Tech Park in Khulna, but it was delayed due to lack of suitable land," the official added. Later, the government has taken a decision to set up the hi-tech park on the land of the defunct Dada Match Factory. Located near the bank of Rupsha River in East Rupsha area in the city, the Dada Match Factory was established on 18 acres of land in 1955. The factory has been closed due to different problems, including ownership feud, in August, 2010. — BSS
