Thrust on latest tech for RMG industry

Country representative of JETRO Daisuke Arai on Sunday said Bangladesh has not enough choice than to adopt latest production technology in the ready-made garment industry to be competitive in the global market.

The global garment market has become dependent on issues like quality, price, environment and compliance which Bangladeshi companies have to adopt for sustaining in the industry, he said while addressing the opening ceremony of AOTS-JUKI training course on 'Sewing Machine Maintenance Technology' at a city hotel.

Vice-president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Managing Director of Evergreen Sweater Mohammad Nasir attended the ceremony as the chief guest while Chairman, JUKI Bangladesh Md Zakaria Bhuiyan as a guest of honour.

Chairman, JUKI Machinery Bangladesh Ltd Katsumi Nihei, Managing Director of AOTS Tetsuji Kawakami, representative of AOTS for Bangladesh Advisor of Steering Committee Dr AKM Moazzem Hussain and Director and Chief Operating Officer, JUKI Bangladesh Ltd ABM Shamsul Alam also spoke on the occasion.

While speaking as the special guest, the country representative of Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) also said rightly adoption of technology helps companies reduce delivery time with ensuring quality production in the global market.

In this regard, he said training also helps companies introduce the latest technology and ensure maintenance of industry sewing machine for upgrading competitiveness.

Mr Nasir said the local garment industry is going through a transition period to sustain in the global market amid competitiveness in the world market.

Despite shutdown of many garment factories amid the situation, many other garment industries have been upgrading them to green industry and the number of such companies is increasing.

He said adopting new technology including new sewing machine is a must to sustain in the global market and to be competitive with various countries including China.

The BGMEA Vice President said ready-made garment industry which helps the country earn 80 per cent of the exports will also continue its contributions to keep the growth boosting.

Managing Director of AOTS Tetsuji Kawakami stressed the need for technology and knowledge transfer for enhancing the productivity and quality similar to the world famous garment industries.

Training in this regard helps meet the expectations and enhance productivity and quality similar to the world expectation, he said.

He said AOTS-JUKI provided training to hundreds of thousands to engineers and management level officers including 2,000 people in Japan and 8,000 in Bangladesh.

Some 24 people are taking part in the sewing machine maintenance technology training course in Dhaka which will continue till February 28.

While talking on the sidelines of the opening ceremony, Mr Nihei said the new technology which digitalization, automatization and systemization of sewing machines will help the country increase productivity by 20-30 per cent.

It will also help the country reduce the gap with its main competitor being the second largest exporting country in the world, he added.
