The Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka (MCCI) on Saturday opened its second office in Gulshan area of the city to render its services to members in a more efficient way.
Planning Minister MA Mannan, in presence of the country's renowned business personalities, inaugurated the office at the Level-6 of the Police Plaza Concord by cutting a cake.
With the new official set-up at Gulshan, its members from Gulshan, Baridhara, Banani and surrounding areas will be able to reach out to the MCCI easily. They will no more need to go to the head office at Motijheel taking the trouble of severe traffic congestions.
At the inauguration ceremony, MCCI President Nihad Kabir said the chamber would continue to carry out its secretarial functions and some selective important work at its Motijheel office due to its close proximity with the key public offices like Bangladesh secretariat, Bangladesh Bank, National Board of Revenue (NBR) and ministries.
The MCCI-with two offices in two different parts of the city-will render its services to the members in a more efficient manner and maintain close liaison with the relevant government agencies timely, according to Nihad.
Planning Minister MA Mannan thanked the business community for its outstanding contributions to positive changes in the country's industry and commerce.
The minister said the country's economy would be in a better position with the support of the vibrant private sector in the coming days.
The country's oldest chamber that started its journey in 1904 hailed two of its past presidents - M Anis Ud Dowla and Latifur Rahman - for their outstanding contributions to the MCCI.
In recognition of their contribution, the conference room and lounge of the new office have been named M Anis Ud Dowla Conference Hall and Latifur Rahman Lounge.
Chairman of Apex Group and former caretaker government adviser Syed Manzur Elahi said the chamber had been quite selective about membership. The business body contributed a lot to the economy as a think-tank, he added.
"We are proud of this chamber, because illustrious businesspeople have been heading it," he said before hailing contributions of the past two presidents - Mr Dowla and Mr Rahman.
President of International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh (ICCB) Mahbubur Rahman, former MCCI president Kutubuddin Ahmed, former AmCham president Aftab Ul Islam, senior officials of the government and development partners, among others, were present at the inauguration.
