The World Standards Day will be observed in the country as elsewhere in the world today (Monday) with the theme "Video standards create a global stage".
Marking the day, President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, industries minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, state minister for industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder and industry secretary Md Abdul Halim issued separate messages.
Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has organised several programmes as the national standards body. It has organised discussion meeting at its regional offices as a part of this programme.
Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar will telecast special programmes on the day.
Different key places of the capital city are also being decorated with banners, festoons and placards to celebrate the day.
Considering the day, BSTI is also going to organise a discussion meeting today (Monday) at its head office in the city.
World Standards Cooperation (WSC) in its website termed video as the modern medium of expression.
"Advances in the technology have changed our world, revolutionising entertainment, connecting friends and families across the globe, enriching our communications experiences and enabling major improvements in medical care and education," it said.
The innovation of recent decades has driven a huge leap forward in video quality. And video has also become more accessible, helping people worldwide to share their stories in vivid, moving pictures.
These gains in both the sophistication and accessibility of video are built on International Standards, WSC said.
WSC is an organisation of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The World Standards Day is being observed since 1970.
It is celebrated every year on October 14 to honour the efforts of the thousands of experts who develop voluntary standards within standards development organisations.
The aim of the Day is to raise awareness among regulators, industry and consumers as to the importance of standardization to the global economy.
BSS adds: In his message, President Abdul Hamid said getting better services today is no longer an expectation but a fundamental right of the consumer.
"It is essential to follow the international standards in all fields, including production, marketing and service delivery. As the national standards organisation, Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institute (BSTI) has an important role in providing the desired services to the people through formulation and development the standard of products and services," he added.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman advised to produce goods using the indigenous methods but ensuring the international quality for the produced goods.
She also said that producing goods ensuring international quality is a must to implement the Vision-2021 and Vision-2041.
