Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) is considered to be the apex medical institute of the country. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina established the university in April 30, 1998 by enacting a law in the Jatiya Sangsad that converted and upgraded the then IPGMR (Institute of Postgraduate Medical Research) to BSMMU.

BSMMU at present has turned into a hub of medical science, especially in the field of education, health service and research activities. This has inspired many medical professionals to get admitted here in post-graduate courses.

BSMMU has undergone spectacular structural development during the long period of Awami League Government. It is now a big compound with several highrise buildings housing two spacious outdoor complexes, Oncology and diagnostic complex, IPNA (Institute of Paediatric Neurodisorder and Autism) complex, Indoor complex (five large buildings), dormitory complex, convention hall and finally, 1000-bed multi-disciplinary super specialised hospital. BSMMU has 1909 beds for the admission of patients referred from 56 departments and a large number of patients are sent to the outdoor departments for their initial screening for admission. A huge number of patients from distant corners of the country get treatment at the outdoor departments with a minimum cost. Actually BSMMU is rendering humanitarian service to the ailing people at the behest of a benevolent government, headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

BSMMU is equipped with

* A modern ICU facility

* Breast and cervical cancer screening project

* Day care centre

* Cochlear implant project (hearing implant)

* Modern Autism Centre

* A sophisticated laboratory services centre (more than 500 types of tests are done)

Moreover, all the post-graduate courses comprising MPhil, MD, MS are affiliated with BSMMU. The university offers 75 courses to about nineteen thousand students. Contribution of this university in flourishing medical science in the country is immense.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has a vision to make BSMMU a centre of excellence in the field of medical science and education. The current Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Kanak Kanti Barua is working relentlessly with his teammates to materialise the vision of the Prime Minister.
