UNICEF chief condemns Yemen for death of 2,200 children

GENEVA, July 03: The UN slammed Tuesday the devastating impact of Yemen's three-year conflict on children, with some 2,200 minors killed, and many more going hungry, forced to fight or dying from preventable diseases. "The relentless conflict in Yemen has pushed a country already on the brink deep into the abyss," warned Henrietta Fore, the executive director of the UN children's agency. Fore, who has just returned from a visit to the war-ravaged country, said in a statement she had seen "what three years of intense war after decades of underdevelopment and chronic global indifference can do to children." — AFP

Cops nab UK healthcare worker for 'murdering' eight babies

LONDON, July 03: British police on Tuesday arrested a female healthcare worker suspected of murdering eight babies and attempting to murder six more after an investigation into deaths at a neo-natal hospital unit. The investigation into The Countess of Chester Hospital in the northwestern English city of Chester began last year and is focusing on the deaths of 17 babies between March 2015 and July 2016. Police are also probing 15 non-fatal collapses of babies at the unit over the same period. — AFP

Japan women's university to accept transgender students

TOKYO, July 03: In a rare move, a Japanese women's university said Tuesday it will begin in 2020 accepting transgender students who were born male but identify as female. An official at the education ministry told AFP the move by Ochanomizu University in Tokyo was "likely unprecedented", though he could not confirm if it was a national first, and praised the decision. "It is desirable that many universities take steps in the direction of understanding the needs of sexual minorities, though making such a decision is up to each university," he said. — AFP

Clash claims lives of five Afghan soldiers

MAIMANA, Afghanistan, July 03: Five Afghan soldiers lost their lives after Taliban militants stormed a temporary military base in Shirin Tagab district of the northern Faryab province on Tuesday, deputy to Provincial Council Sibghatullah Silab said. Taliban militants, according to the official, attacked a provisional military base in Gorzad Kotal area of Shirin Tagab district in early hours of Tuesday killing five soldiers and injuring few others. Taliban outfit has also confirmed the clash, claiming eight soldiers were killed in the fighting lasted for few hours. The restive Faryab province with Maimana as its capital has been the scene of Taliban-led insurgency over the past decade. — Xinhua
