Thousands march for

democracy in Serbia

BELGRADE, Feb 17: Thousands of people have rallied in Serbia's capital for 11th week in a row against populist President Aleksandar Vucic and his government. The crowds at Saturday's protest lit flares outside the parliament building chanting anti-government slogans. Opposition parties meanwhile offered an "agreement" to the citizens pledging to restore democracy they say Vucic has stifled. — AP

Armed bar attack kills

five in Mexico

MEXICO CITY, Feb 17: Gunmen burst into a bar in the Caribbean resort city of Cancun and opened fire, killing five people and wounding five more, authorities said on Saturday. Quintana Roo state prosecutors said in a statement that the attack took place in a club called La Kuka, which is located on a main avenue in central Cancun about 4 miles (6 kilometres) away from the seaside tourist hotel zone. — AP

Montenegrins demand govt's

resignation for graft

PODGORICA, Feb 17: Several thousand people rallied in Montenegro on Saturday to demand the resignation of long-serving President Milo Djukanovic's government over allegations of corruption. Japan PM nominated Trump

for Nobel after US request

TOKYO, Feb 17: Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize last autumn after being requested to do so by Washington, a Japanese newspaper reported Sunday. Washington sounded out Tokyo over the possibility of nominating Trump for the prize after his landmark summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un in June last year, an unnamed Japanese government source told the Asahi Shimbun. The report came after Trump's claim on Friday that Abe had nominated him for the prize. — AFP

Danish woman to head UN

Environment Programme

JOHANNESBURG, Feb 17: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says he intends to appoint Inger Andersen of Denmark as the new Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, which is based in Nairobi, Kenya. Guterres made the announcement in a statement issued by his office. Ms. Andersen is currently serving as Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, a post she has held since 2015. — AP

Helicopter crashes while fighting fires in New Zealand's south island

WELLINGTON, Feb 17: A helicopter involved in fighting bush fires near the Pigeon Valley of the South Island of New Zealand crashed at around 3 pm local time, according to Nelson Tasman Civil Defense sector. The pilot survived and is receiving medical treatment for non-life threatening injuries, according to Roger Ball, the local Civil Defense Controller. — Xinhua

by over 11,000 in 2018
