DR Congo bans Kinshasa rallies over tensions

KINSHASA, July 22: DR Congo authorities have banned political rallies this week in the capital Kinshasa because of tensions between supporters of President Felix Tshisekedi and those of former leader Joseph Kabila, police said Sunday. Tshisekedi was elected in December to replace Kabila who presided over sub-Saharan Africa's biggest country for nearly two decades. Tensions rose in the capital after the youth wing of Tshisekedi's Democracy and Social Progress party (UDPS) announced it would hold a protest against the candidacy of a former justice minister for the senate presidency. — AFP

India successfully launches Moon Mission-2

NEW DELHI, July 22: India on Monday successfully launched its Moon Mission-2, or Chandrayaan-2, which was aborted on July 15 due to a technical snag. The rocket GSLV-Mk-III carrying the Orbiter, Lander Vikram and Rover Pragyaan took off at 14:43 (Indian Standard Time) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, off the Bay of Bengal coast located in India's southern state of Andhra Pradesh. The Lander and the Rover are expected to touch down near the Lunar South Pole in early September, becoming the first ever spacecraft to land in that region. —Xinhua

New Zealand plans tighter gun licensing

WELLINGTON, July 22: New Zealand on Monday revealed plans to establish a firearm register and to overhaul its licensing systems for gun owners in the second set of gun law reforms introduced in response to mass shootings in the city of Christchurch. The new legislation would tighten the rules for gun owners and dealers to get and keep a license, which would have to be renewed every five years, and prohibit visitors to New Zealand from buying a gun, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said in a press conference. New Zealand banned military-style semi-automatic and assault rifles in the first phase of reforms introduced days after a lone gunman attacked Muslim worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch on Mar 15, killing 51 people. — Reuters

Spanish parliament debates forming new govt

MADRID, July 22: Caretaker Prime Minister Pedro Snchez is seeking the endorsement of the Spanish Parliament ahead of this week's confidence votes for him to form a new government. Snchez's Socialist Party won April 28 general election but he still needs the support of other parties to stay in power. Monday's debate comes as the Socialists are negotiating for a last-minute deal with the far-left United We Can party to possibly create a coalition government. — AP
