Israel president begins talks

to form new govt

JERUSALEM, Sept 22: Israeli President Reuven Rivlin began two days of crucial talks on Sunday with party leaders before selecting his candidate for prime minister, after a deadlocked repeat election was set to make forming any new government a daunting task. Israel's largely ceremonial president is tasked with picking the politician with the best chance of forming a stable coalition government.—AP

Over-weight firefighter sues his

colleagues over harassment

HAUPPAUGE, Sept 22: A Long Island firefighter is taking his colleagues to court for what he says was incessant teasing about his weight. The New York Post reported Saturday that John Munro filed a discrimination lawsuit in federal court against fellow firefighters in the Suffolk County hamlet of Hauppauge. The nearly 350-pound Munro says he was called names like "cow" and harangued for taking up two seats in the fire truck. — AP

Bus crash kills 25 in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Sept 22: A bus crash on a mountainous road in northwest Pakistan Sunday killed 25 passengers and injured 20 others, police said. Abdul Wakil, a local police officer, said the accident happened in the Chilas distract on the bus' route from Skardu to the city of Rawalpindi. Wakil said rescue efforts were facing difficulties in the remote mountainous terrain due to lack of needed equipment and resources. Such road accidents are common in Pakistan where motorists largely disregard traffic rules and safety standards on battered roads. — AP

Brazil residents protest after boy shot

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 22: Hundreds of residents of one of Rio de Janeiro's largest shantytowns marched Saturday to demand an end to the violence after an 8-year-old girl was killed by a stray bullet during a police operation. Agatha Sales Felix was hit by the bullet Friday in the Complexo do Alemao shantytown amid what police said was shootout with suspected criminals. — AP
