South Korea to send team to US for talks

SEOUL, Apr 23: A South Korean delegation will head to Washington as early as this week for talks with US officials after the United States announced plans to end all Iran sanction waivers, two South Korean government officials said on Tuesday. South Korea, a major buyer of Iranian oil, was among seven countries that won exemptions from US sanctions late last year. It allowed South Korea to buy limited amounts of Iranian oil, mainly condensate - an ultra-light form of crude oil used for petrochemical products. The Foreign Ministry said on Monday Seoul would make every effort to convey its position until next month's deadline when the United States said it will not grant any waivers on imports of Iranian oil beyond May 01. —Reuters

Thai EC moves to disqualify anti-junta politician

BANGKOK, Apr 23: Thailand’s Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday accused a prominent anti-junta politician of breaching the election law, moving to disqualify him from parliament almost a month after the disputed March 24 election. Rising political star Thanathorn Jungroongruangkit, 40, is accused of holding shares in a media company after registering his candidacy, which would violate the election law. The outcome of the first national election since a 2014 military coup is still unclear. Final results due on May 9 will indicate whether a pro-army party has enough seats to allow junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha to remain in power. Thanathorn’s progressive, youth-oriented Future Forward Party came third in the election in a surprisingly strong showing. — Reuters
