Vietnam leader Trong suffering from illness

HANOI, Apr 25: Vietnamese leader Nguyen Phu Trong, the architect of the Southeast Asian country's anti-corruption drive, has been suffering from an unspecified illness, four diplomatic sources have told the news agency. Trong was admitted to the 108 Military Central Hospital in Hanoi, the diplomatic sources said, requesting anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue in the communist-ruled country. In the first official comments on the 75-year-old Vietnamese leader's health since his last public appearance 11 days ago, foreign ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang said on Thursday that Trong's health had been affected by a "heavy workload" and "changeable weather conditions". — Reuters

11 die in China construction site accident

SHIJIAZHUANG, Apr 25: Eleven workers were killed and two others were seriously injured after an elevator collapsed at a construction site in north China's Hebei Province Thursday morning, local authorities said. The collapse occurred around 8 a.m. in Taocheng District of Hengshui city, according to the city government. The injured are being treated at a local hospital. An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway. — Xinhua

Prince William meets NZ mosque attack responders

WELLINGTON, Apr 25: Britain's Prince William on Thursday met with some of the police officers and medics who were the first to respond to last month's mosque attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand. The Duke of Cambridge arrived in Christchurch in the afternoon after earlier attending an Anzac Day service in Auckland alongside Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. At the service, the prince laid a wreath of red and white flowers on behalf of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. William is on a two-day trip to New Zealand and plans to meet later with survivors of the mosque attacks in which 50 people were killed and 50 others wounded. — AP

‘Britain wants Brexit deal approved before July’

GLASGOW, Apr 25: British Prime Minister Theresa May's government wants to get her thrice-defeated Brexit deal approved by parliament before the new European Union parliament opens in July, her de-facto deputy, David Lidington, said. Lidington, cabinet office minister, told reporters in Glasgow that the atmosphere at talks with the opposition Labour Party was productive. — Reuters

Ex-US VP Biden announces 2020 run for White House

WASHINGTON, Apr 25: Former US Vice President Joe Biden jumped into the race for the White House Thursday, positioning the veteran Democrat as a frontrunner among the many candidates seeking to challenge Donald Trump in 2020. The party's 76-year-old senior statesman is the most experienced and recognised Democrat in the race, a popular former vice president who has been dominating early polls following months-even years-of campaign planning. In a tweet accompanied by a three-and-a-half minute video, Biden said he could not stand idly by as US President Donald Trump "fundamentally altered the character of this nation". — AFP
