Risk of imminent rupture

at another Brazil dam

BRUMADINHO, Jan 27: An alarm warning of an imminent mining dam rupture was activated early on Sunday in Brumadinho, the same Brazilian community where a dam collapsed killing 34 and leaving some 300 missing, firefighters and the mining company said. The alarm went off at 5:30 am (0730 GMT) warning of dangerously high water levels at a dam that is part of the Corrego do Feijao mining complex, a statement by the Vale mining company said. — AFP

Train derailment paralyses

Vietnam north-south railway

HANOI, Jan 27:A train departing from Vietnam's capital Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City derailed on Sunday in central Binh Thuan province, causing no casualties but paralyzing the country's North-South railway, local media reported. The SE1 train derailed when approaching a station in Tuy Phong district, which paralysed the North-South railway for hours.—Xinhua

22 hurt in Russia cafe blast

MOSCOW, Jan 27: A gas boiler exploded at a cafe in west Russia's Saratov Region on Saturday, injuring 22 out of 40 people there, the emergence situations ministry's local branch said. It said that 14 of the injured have been hospitalized and six of them have severe injuries. Two children received burns of mild severity in the explosion.—Xinhua

PANAMA CITY, Jan 27: Young people challenged Pope Francis on the Catholic Church's sex abuse scandal and the plight of Christians in the Middle East as the youth took center stage on Saturday in the final events of World Youth Day in Panama. Iraq to summon Turkey envoy

BAGHDAD, Jan 27: Iraq on Sunday said it would summon the Turkish ambassador over the death of a Kurdish protester after Turkish troops opened fire on demonstrators in the country's northwest. On Saturday night, Kurdish protesters stormed a Turkish army position in the Shiladzeh region of northwestern Iraq to protest the deaths of four civilians they said were killed last week in Turkish bombardment. — AFP

Earthquake hits near Fiji

SYDNEY, Jan 27: A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit near the Pacific island nation of Fiji just before 8:00 local time on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said. Shortly after the area felt another smaller tremor which registered 5.2 magnitude. Both earthquakes were located just south of the island between Fiji and Tonga, and were at depths of a little over 500 km. — Xinhua

Macron heads to Egypt for talks

CAIRO, Jan 27: French President Emmanuel Macron is headed to Egypt with a large delegation on a three-day trip to reinforce ties with the Arab world's most populous country. He was set to arrive on Sunday in the country's south to visit the temple of Abu Simbel and other archaeological sites, before meeting his counterpart Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. — AP
