ISLAMABAD, June 25 (Xinhua): Police claimed to have killed three terrorists belonging to al-Qaida in an encounter in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi, local media reported late on Monday night.

Local media quoted Senior Superintendent of Police Irfan Ali Bahadur as saying that the three terrorists were gunned down during a joint operation conducted by police and intelligence agencies in the Khuda Bux Goth area of Karachi.

The officer said police raided a house to arrest a group of terrorists on Sunday night, but they resisted by opening fire at the police party and were killed in retaliation.

"We are sharing the information after completing the identification process of the killed terrorists," said the police official, adding that two other terrorists managed to escape by taking the advantage of the darkness after the shootout started.

Police also seized a suicide jacket, 10 kg of ball bearings, explosives, sub-machine guns, hundreds of live bullets, a pistol, hand grenades, remote control circuits and detonators, as well as detonating wires and safety fuse wire from the possession of the terrorists.
