Higher import duties on cattle meat to save local producers

Responding to local cattle meat producers, the government imposed higher import duties on meat of bovine animals.
Local vegetable growers also have got budgetary gifts as higher duties have also been slapped on carrot, turnip and mushroom import.
A 20 per cent of supplementary duty (SD) and 15 per cent of value added tax (VAT) has been imposed on importing 'meat and edible offal of bovine animals, sheep or goats' (HS Codes: 02.01, 02.02, 02.04, 02.06, 02.07), which was earlier zero, according to the budget speech.
Meanwhile, SD on carrot and turnip has also been imposed at 20 per cent and VAT at 15 per cent, which was earlier zero.
Customs duty on mushroom import has been increased to 15 per cent from 5.0 per cent earlier.
