FE REPORT | June 02, 2023 00:00:00

The proposed budget for the fiscal year 2023-24 has introduced travel tax for the domestic air passengers, along with suggesting increasing tax for international air, water and land passengers.

According to the Finance Bill, Tk 200 travel tax has been introduced for the domestic air passengers with effect from July 01.

In case of international travel tax, the Finance Bill has proposed Tk 2,000 as travel tax for air passengers of the SAARC countries, which earlier varied from Tk 500 to Tk 1,200 - depending on the member countries.

Except North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Hong Kong, North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Taiwan, travel tax for other countries have been proposed to rise to Tk 4,000 from Tk 3,000.

International passengers travelling to North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Hong Kong, North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Taiwan will have to pay Tk 6,000 each as travel tax, which is Tk 4,000 now.

As per the proposal, the passengers, who will travel to other countries through land and water routes, have to pay Tk 1,000 as travel tax.

The Finance Bill, however, has proposed to withdraw travel tax for the hajj pilgrims and children below five years for the first time. But the provision for the passengers below 12 years paying half travel tax on all routes has not been changed.
