LAXMIPUR, Dec 13 (BSS): A total of 160 landless and river erosion affected families were rehabilitated on Friday in remote Char Abdullah Union under Ramgati Upzila of the district.
Local administration sources said 32 barracks were erected at a cost of Taka 41.2 million under two Ashrayan projects at Chairman Bazar and Elisha for the purpose.
The barracks were constructed on 10 acres of land under the direct supervision of 33rd infantry division of Bangladesh Army based at Comilla Cantonment.
At a barracks handing over ceremony, local lawmaker Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun said Char Abdullah Union is an isolated island surrounded by the Meghna River.
The landless and river erosion-hit people of the area would be rehabilitated in phases under the financial support the government, he said.
With UNO Mohammad Delwar Hossain in the chair, the function was addressed, among others, by Upazila Parishad Chairman Abdul Wahed, Vice-chairman Mir Marjina Begum and Awami League leaders Mejbah Uddin and Zakir Hossain Liton Chowdhury.
