233rd birth anniv of Idu Biswas observed in Jhenidah

JHENIDAH, Apr 29: 233rd birth anniversary of mystic bard Idu Biswas was observed at village Ghoramara under Porahati union of Jhenidah Sadar upazila on Monday.
Shahidul Islam Hiron, chairman, Porahati union under Sadar upazila was the chief guest at the function with Fayzullah Fayez, chairman, Dogasi union, in the chair.
Md. Bikash Kumar Biswas, chairman, Padmakor union, Khandaker Farukuzzaman Farid, chairman, Harishangkarpur union, among others, attended the ceremony as special guests.
Azam Mondol (42), UP member of no. 7 ward of Porahati union and a social worker is the main man for taking initiative to observer the poet's birth anniversary for the last few years.
Idu Biswas, a spiritual personality, composer and singer of Dhoa Jari, a new form of baul music was born at the village on 14th Baishakh in 1149 according to Bangla calendar.
This versatile man composed hundreds of Dhoa Jari songs, many of which have been lost for lack of preservation. Yet, over one hundred songs have recently been preserved by the local people.
The baul was used to be invited to the courts of the then zemindars for presentation of songs.
