245 hectares of land come under garlic production in Joypurhat

JOYPURHAT, Jan 21: Garlic peasants of the district are eyeing a bumper production this season amid a favourable weather condition.

The plants are growing well across the district as the local agri office has provided all sort of necessary support to the farmers. Growers are expecting to harvest the spicy crop from the next month.

Sources said the crop becomes harvestable after 90 days of its sowing. Cultivation process of garlic is easy and it requires low production cost. Farmers of Akkelpur, Kalai, Khetlal, Panchbibi and Sadar upazilas to take care of the garlic field to achieve a good yield.

In a recent visit at Madhu Pukur Bazar, this correspondent found old garlic is being sold at Tk 80 to Tk 100 in the retail market while the wholesale rate is Tk 75 to Tk 80.

"I have cultivated the crop on 23 decimals of land spending Tk 4,000 this season", said farmer Prodip Kumar Mohomta of Khetlal upazila of the district.

He further said, "I am expecting to make a profit of over Tk 14,000 if the market price remains high till harvesting period."

Deputy director of DAE Sudhindranath Ray said the farmers of the district have cultivated the spice on 245 hectares of land.
