25 fishermen get bi-cycles with silver pots from govt in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, July 9 (BSS): A total of 25 poor fishermen of Fulchhari upazila in the district received bi-cycles with silver pots from the government on Tuesday to carry fish fries smoothly.

The bi-cycles and silver pots were distributed to the fishermen under the project of Poverty Reduction and Livelihood Security for the People of Economically Depressed Areas of fisheries department of the government.

A simple function was also held on the upazila parishad premises in the afternoon at the initiative of upazila fisheries office in cooperation with upazila administration.

Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangshad Advocate Fazley Rabbi Miah handed over the tools to the beneficiary fishermen as the chief guest and upazila parishad chairman Habibur Rahman was present as the special guest.

Speaking on the occasion, deputy speaker Advocate Fazley Rabbi said as the fish contributes a lot to fulfill 80 percent of the total animal protein demand, there is no alternative to enhancing its production in the country.

Terming fish as the easy means to meet up the protein deficiency he urged all to protect the fish species in all the water bodies anyhow in a bid to increase its production to a great extent.

Earlier, upazila fisheries officer Mazibar Rahman briefed all about the objectives and ongoing activities of the project that was being implemented here for few years last.

National Fisheries Week celebrated

Another BSS report says: National Fisheries Week-2014 was celebrated in the district from July 2 to 8 in a befitting manner with a call to boost production of fishes to meet nutrition demand.

Department of fisheries in cooperation with district administration had chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the week.

The programmes included rally, discussion meeting, conducting mobile court against formalin tainted fish, views exchange meeting with the media men and prize distribution.

On Tuesday, a concluding ceremony was also held at the conference room of district collectorate building here with additional deputy commissioner Abu Bakar Siddique in the chair.

The function was also addressed, among others, by district fisheries officer Abdul Latif, fisheries resource survey Golam Zilani, Sadar upazila agriculture officer Abu Sayeed, fish cultivator Saiful Islam and fishermen leader Upendranath Roy.
