28 years on, but no brick building of Palsha High School

RAJSHAHI, Dec 03: The students of Palsha High School under Naopara union of Durgapur upazila of Rajshahi attend their classes in dilapidated mud-built rooms. Even after 28-year of the founding of the school, the pucca or brick-built building has not been constructed by replacing the tattered, dilapidated schoolhouse.

The school also lacks hygienic toilet and supply of clean water. The overall environment of the school is very dirty. There is also an acute shortage of classrooms. As a result, uncertainty looms over attending classes by students due to shortages of classrooms whenever the Corona situation is over.

According to sources, Palsha High School was established in 1992 with two large-sized mud-built rooms. Later those two rooms were divided into several rooms by erecting walls between those rooms. At present, the old mud- built rooms are in a dilapidated condition. Doors, windows and walls have been broken. The tin-shed roofs of the rooms are also damaged and broken. The rooms are completely unfit for use and there is no security of students and teachers.

Teachers and students of the school suffer from the dirty environment, unhygienic toilet and water supply crisis. The school stands over several poles only which may collapse at any moment creating a disastrous situation.

The school now holds some 350 students. Only two pucca rooms of the school were built in 1999 of which one room is used for Office and another room is used for the classroom for the students of class VI. Rest classes are held in the old, mud-built rooms.

Abdur Rahman, Head Master of the school informed, the school authorities have applied several times for the construction of a new building for the school but no measure has been taken from the government in this connection so far. But, the students are attending their classes in dilapidated rooms by risking their lives.

Advocate Rezaul Haque, President of Managing Committee of the school informed, the condition of the school is susceptible and dilapidated in condition. He added he along with the teachers and guardians was worried over opening the school and continuing the classes after the Corona pandemic is over. The condition of the mud-built rooms are dilapidated, doors and windows of the rooms have been broken and is now completely unfit for use.

He sought assistance and pragmatic step from the local Members of Parliament to construct a concrete building by demolishing the dilapidated mud-built school rooms.

Zahidul Haque, Upazila Secondary Education Officer said Education Engineering Department is responsible for the construction of the school buildings. He would take necessary action in this connection.

Dr. Monsur Rahman, local Member of Parliament said there is no building in the school. Students attend their classes in dilapidated mud-built rooms risking their lives. Accident may occur at any moment. He further mentioned after being informed about the condition of the school, he talked with the President of Managing Committee of the school and he would allot a four-storey building for the school soon.
