300 Jhenidah hawkers doing brisk business with scraps

JHENIDAH, Jun 09: Over 300 scrap hawkers in the district are doing brisk business procuring several tonnes of leftovers.

Around 200 scrap hawkers live free of cost at eight scrap trading centres, known as 'Vangri Potty'.

Others collect old things at shops of different bazars under six upazilas.

A total of 120 hawkers work under six whole markets at Pagla Kanai intersection.

Besides, there are three more wholesale points in Chuadanga bus stand area in the town, where around 40 scrap vendors are engaged collecting old things.

Most of the vendors of the town hail from Kushtia and Gopalganj districts.

Md Alamgir Hossain, a scrap hawker of Mothurapur village who works under a hawkers' potty near Chuadanga Bus Stand told this correspondent on Thursday that their business was not bad.

"I earn Tk 30,000 per month collecting scrap things both from urban and rural areas”, he said.

“Today I have brought 200 kgs of scrap things including old newspapers and books, left over plastic materials, silver, bronze, copper and iron from Shailkupa upazila," he added.

Md Akhter, a manager at Mamun's scrap things centre at Upashahorpara in the town said that newspaper was sold for Tk 16 per kg, book at Tk. 12, any type of plastic material at Tk 8.0, cement sachet at Tk 4.00 per piece and plastic sachet at Tk 3.0.

In addition, a very popular scrap paper item thick carton was sold at the rate of Tk 12 per kg at the wholesale scrap markets in the town.

Md. Rubel Mia at Arshed scrap centre said that metals were sold at their collection centre at different rates ranging from Tk 23 to Tk 450 per kg.

Old iron (thick) such as angel, rod and thin iron were sold at Tk 23 and 29 respectively, thick copper at Tk 450 and thin one at Tk 380, aluminum, silver at Tk 150 and machinery silver at Tk 80 a kg.

Besides old cooking pans of aluminum was sold at Tk 40 per piece while that of iron at Tk 15 a piece.

The hawkers make profit ranging from Tk 3 per kg to Tk 5 per kg on the basis of nature of old scrap materials they supply to the wholesale markets here, said a hawker Rezaul.

Manager at Arshed's Vanri Potty from where three trucks were sent to Dhaka every month said that each truck carried 12 tonnes to 13 tonnes of metal including copper, silver, aluminium and iron.

Amirul Islam, a scrap wholesaler at Palga Kanai intersection said they sent around 45 trucks loaded with paper, plastic things and scrap metals to Dhaka every month.
