SYLHET, July 2: Sylhet Metropolice (SMP) has been suffering much due to shortage of manpower for long.
Against the 2323 sanctioned posts, about 2,000 are working in different posts in the metropolis area, spread over 528 km area in 6 police stations,sources informed.
Of the vacant posts, 34 police inspectors are working against the 48 sanctioned posts. Sixty six posts of sub Inspectors were now vacant while the number of ASIs vacant posts is 39 and 35 positions of Nayek is vacant in addition to 136 posts of constables. Besides, 7 posts of Assistant commissioners has been lying vacant while only 10 traffic surgeants were working against the sanctioned posts of 34.
Contacted, the additional commissioner of the SMP, SM Rukon Uddin told this correspondent Thursday although it is tough, we are managing the law and order situation amid over 300 vacant positions of the force.
Although Sylhet division was formed in 1994, the proposal for establishing the SMP was first made in 2000, but it got no development for years due to red tapism while the Sylhet city corporation staretd its journey in 2002. Al last, in line with a cabinet decision, SMP was started on 15 October that year.
However, formal launching was done on 26 October same year with only Kotwali and Dakshin Surma under it.Four other police stations were set up later. Yet the unit continues its job at the temporary office at the WDB's old rest house at the city's Nairpul area.
Presently, several rented buildings in different areas are also being used as office of Deputy commissioners of SMP, sources informed.
The authority was now contemplating to establish permanent SMP complex at the present location, said the additional commissioner.
