330 poor mothers get maternity allowance

GAIBANDHA, May 15 (BSS): Department of Women Affairs (DWA) distributed Tk 0.69 million as maternity allowance to 330 poor mothers of Sundarganj upazila in the district for the first six-month of 2013-2014 fiscal.

The objective of the maternity allowance distribution is to help the poor mothers remove their malnutrition problem side by side with involving them in rearing chicken, duck, goat and cow to earn economical benefit for their poverty alleviation.

Besides, to encourage the mothers to give birth only two children using family planning methods to keep their body healthy and fit and to check the population growth of the country is another objective of the allowance distribution.

On Tuesday, a total of Tk 6,93,000 were distributed among 330 mothers of 15 unions of the upazila for the first half of 2013-2014 fiscal. Each of the beneficiaries got Tk 2,100 from the department.

A simple function was also held on the premises of the upazila parishad in the afternoon with upazila women affairs officer Chaitali Paul in the chair.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abu Rafa M. Arif attended the function and formally distributed the allowance to the mothers as the chief guest.
