3,710 hectares of land come under jute cultivation

NARSINGDI, Apr 25 (BSS): The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken up a programme to cultivate Jute on 3,710 hectares of land in the district with the production target of 35,900 bales during the current season.

Official sources said, Tosa variety would be cultivated in 2,230 hectares, Masta in 120 hectares, Kalap in 910 hectares and local variety in 550 hectares of land.

Deputy Director DAE, Narsingdi Latafat Hossain said farmers of all the six upazilas in the district have started Jute farming with enthusiasm and they have already cultivated 2,040 hectares of land.

He said farmers have been showing more interest in farming jute this season as they got fair price of jute last year.

He said, the DAE is encouraging the farmers to cultivate more jute, the important cash crop by adopting modern technology. Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) has taken measures to provide the farmers with High Yielding varieties of seeds, fertilisers and insecticides and other inputs for growing more Jute.

He added Commercial banks are also providing short loans to the farmers. Farmers are showing more interest to cultivate jute as by the initiatives of Prime Minister Sheik Hasina Jute has getting back its lost glory.
