KHULNA, Apr 9: A total 64,676 metric tonnes onion has been imported from India through Bhomrah land port of Satkhira during the last three months (January to March-2015). About 69,595 metric tonnes were imported in 2014 of the same time. Though the import has been shortened than the previous year but the price of onion has fallen as the supply is increased in the local market. As a result the importers are in trouble as well as onion cultivators of the country.
Bhomrah Customs source said that 64,676 tonne onion has been imported from the land port. Of them, 26,214 tonne imported in January, 22,239 tonnes in February and 16,093 tonnes in March.
At present imported onion is being sold at Tk. 19/20 per kg but the import cost stands at Tk. 18/20 per kg. As a result the importers face huge losses.
Onion cultivator Yarul Islam of village Ghona, Satkhira said that locally produced onion was sold at Tk. 40/45 per kg last year, whereas at present the same is being sold at Tk. 24/25 per kg. The cultivators said that they are often compelled to sell their products at prices less than the production costs.
Agriculture Extension Department source said, 800 hectares of land have been brought under onion cultivation in seven Upazilas of Satkhira of the current year with a production target of one thousand metric tonnes.
