7 killed in road accidents

GAZIPUR, May 31 (UNB): Three people were killed and at least 40 others wounded as a minibus fell into a roadside water body at Samarsing village in Sadar Upazila Tuesday. The deceased were identified as businessman Nurul Kabir (45), of Chittagong, cloth trader Iliyas (40), of Jamalpur, and Siddik Ahmed (65), resident of Satkania in Chittagong. Police and local sources said the minibus carrying about 70 passengers was going to Modhupur in Tangail from Chittagong. The vehicle met the accident near Nagda Bridge at about 6:30am as its driver lost control over the steering. Later, local fire fighters along with local people rescued the vehicle from the water body and recovered three bodies. The injured were sent to different hospitals. Manhole, large number of local people, including women and children, thronged the spot hearing news of the accident, which created a traffic jam on both sides of Dhaka Bypass road for about five hours. BSS report from Cox's Bazar adds : Four people were killed and 15 others injured, five of them critically, in a road accident at Ramu on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar Highway Monday. Police and witnesses said the accident occurred when a Cox's Bazar-bound passenger bus from Chittagong collided head on with a Naikhangchhari-bound passenger jeep from Ramu, causing instantaneous death to four passengers of the jeep. The victims were identified as Amina Khatun (45), Nurul Huq (50), Nurul Islam, (44), and the jeep driver Kalu (30). Ten injured were admitted to Ramu Hospital and five to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital. Police seized both the vehicles.
