SYLHET, Nov 08: Inhabitants of three upazilas of Sunamganj district have been suffering a lot for over three years as the seven-kilometer approach road to Abduj Jahur Bridge in the east of the district town has been lying unfit for use for long.

Over one million inhabitants of Biswambharpur, Dharmapasha and Tahirpur upazilas and Madhyanagar are the worst sufferers for the unfit condition of the road, said a number of locals.

The department concerned did not pay heed to the situation even after repeated appeals, the locals lamented. The said approach road extends from Rahdanagar to Chalbond point.

The approach road got damaged due to repeated floods this year, locals said.

Even a good portion of bituminous carpeting has been washed away while ditches have developed at various places.

But there has been taken no initiative to repair the damaged parts of the road at the cost of people's sufferings.

Big potholes have developed at places but there is no step to repair those.

Often small vehicles like CNG-run auto-rickshaws go out of order due to the dilapidated state of the road at places, said three-wheeler driver Anwar Hossain, who runs his vehicle regularly on this road.

Besides, there is no alternative road for the inhabitants of these upazilas.

A good number of people come to visit the tourist spots like Niladri Lake, Tekergaht etc in frontier Tahirpur upazila, but they have to suffer extremely in the seven kilometre stretch.

Contacted, an official at the Roads and Highways Department said, "After the total damage of the seven km stretch of the regionally important road by this year's repeated floods, we had sent a proposal for a major repair programme."

"We hope it would be approved soon, so that we could start reconstruction work at the earliest," he added.
