9 deer poachers, 4 fishermen held in Sundarbans

BAGERHAT, Aug 12 (UNB): Forest officials and Bangladesh Coast Guard members in separate drives arrested nine deer poachers and four fishermen along with 12 kg venison, deer hides, traps, 16 bottles of pesticides and six trawlers from the Sundarbans under Sharankhola upazila early Tuesday.

The arrested poachers are Hasan Hawladar, 28, Faruk Mridha, 25, Mohammad Shahjahan Majhi, 40, Badshah Shikdar, 52, Mohammad Farid Akon, 30, of Bhandaria upazila in Pirojpur, Abdul Kader, 32, Mohammad Sona Miah, 40, Mohammad Hanif Mir, 50, and Mohammad Abu Bakar Siddique, 25, of Patharghata upazila in Barguna district.

The four fishermen were identified as Mohammad Mintu Gazi, 25, and Babul Gazi, 22, sons of Mohammad Khokon Ali Gazi, Nazrul Sardar, 25, son of Mobarak Sardar, and Mohammad Faruk Sardar, 25, son of Jihad Sardar of Koyra upazila in Khulna district.

Acting on secret information, a team of forest officials conducted a drive in Pankhidia Char area of the Sundarbans in the early hours and arrested four deer poachers along with 6 kg venison and a trawler, said Mohammad Ameer Hossain Chowdhury, divisional forest officer of Sundarbans East division.

In another incident, a joint team of forest officials and coastguards conducted a drive in Dimerchar area and arrested five deer poachers along with a deer hide, deer head, six kg venison, several traps and a trawler, said Coast Guard Mongla West Zone Operation Department Staff Officer Lt Commander Mohammad Alauddin Nayon.

Meanwhile, forest officials arrested four fishermen while catching fish illegally by spraying pesticides along with four trawlers and 16 bottles of pesticides from Dhabrikhal area in the Sundarbans early Tuesday.

Separate cases were filed in this connection.
