A mango tree that remains prolific through the year in Jhenidah

JHENIDAH, Mar 21: A mango tree yielding fruit throughout the year under Shailkupa upazila in the district is benefiting a farmer a lot.
Md. Abu Taher, son of Abdus Sattar of Manoharpur village in the upazila has been getting delicious mangoes from his tree all the year round since 2008. This yielding has aroused curiosity among many people from far and wide and sometimes visitors are coming to see mangoes in the tree out of season.
Owner Abu Taher said that he procured two mango plants from a nursery of nearby Garagonj bazaar in 2007 for Tk 1,000 each and planted them at the yard of his house. However, one of them died a few months later and the rest one started giving mangoes from the next year.
Every year Taher obtains around 200 mangoes weighing 50-60 kgs. When this correspondent visited the tree he noticed many green and ripe mangoes swinging from some of its branches, while some other branches were sprouting fast. The weight of a mango ranges from 300-550 grams, and ripe mangoes with captivating flavour and taste.
The farmer said he needs to use neither pesticide nor fertiliser for boosting the yielding of fruits. Moreover, a beehive settled in the tree has been giving him honey regularly for the last two years contributing to the family income.
Abu Taher has arranged his homestead covering 20 decimals of land on the conception of one house, one farm with his own initiative. Presently, he is cultivating fish in his small pond and raising cattle and poultry to get protein as well as earn money.
