MAGURA, Feb 3: Middlemen syndicate is dominating over price of mustard in Magura depriving the farmers.
During a visit to Kachindi, Abalpur, Raygram and Kalinagar mustard was seen to be sold at Tk 800 to Tk 900 per maund. But farmers said, mustard was sold in the market at Tk 1900 to Tk 2000 per maund 3 weeks ago.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Magura informed, a total of 1850 hectares of land was brought under mustard cultivation in the district this year. A bumper production has been achieved in the district which is 2050 metric tonnes.
When contacted, Taher Sheikh, a farmer of village Akshi under Magura Sadar Upazila said, "We sold mustard at Tk 2000 per maund. But now it is being sold at Tk 800 per maund. Abnormal fall in mustard price has shattered our dream. By selling mustard at this price we shall not be able to cover our production cost."
Another farmer Dulla Datta of village Araishat under Magura Sadar Upazila said, "Middlemen syndicate is dominating over mustard price to cash more money. Many of us are returning home with broken hearts without selling mustard at present price."
On contact, Uday Shaha, a mustard trader of Magura Notun bazar area denied the allegation of making syndicate and said, "Due to on-going blockade transporting mustard to different parts of the country from Magura is being hampered. Consequently the price has fallen in the market."
On contact, Magura DAE deputy director Md Shohrab Hossein said, "Present price of musatrd is not satisfactory." He added with improvement of political situation mustard price will be hiked.
