Activities in Khulna stop for half an hour

KHULNA, Nov 26: People from all walks of life here observed 'Stop Khulna' for half an hour today (Wednesday) from 11.00 am to press home their demands for adequate fund allocation in the next national budget 2012-13 for implementation of different development projects in the region.
During the programme all educational institutions, business establishments and offices remained suspended for the time. Eighty hats and bazaars of the district supported the programme and closed their buying and selling for the period.
The programme organised by the Greater Khulna Development Action Coordination Committee (GKDACC), placed an 11-point demand.
The demands includes supply of natural gas through pipeline to the south-western part of the country, gearing up of the Khulna WASA activities, modernisation of Mongla seaport and Bhomra land port, deep-seaport at Akram point, establishing a modern railway station, reopening of all closed jute mills and Khulna Newsprint Mills, Dada Match Factory, shrimp industries and poultry industries, solving water logging in Khulna city, construction of an IT village, preserving biodiversity of the Sundarbans, installation of a full-fledged TV centre, development of all power generation plants and second submarine cable landing station in Mongla.
They also demanded structural development of Khulna City Corporation, an agriculture university in Khulna, modernisation of Khulna district stadium, an airport in the zone, completing the works of Mohila Krira Complex, appointment  of more specialist physicians at Sheikh Abu Naser Specialised Hospital, construction of Padma Bridge at Mawa, capital dredging in Mongla sea port, investment facilities in the Mongla EPZ on easy terms, construction of sustainable embankments and dykes in the Sidr and Aila affected districts, rehabilitation of the affected people there and excavation of the Kapatakkha and Betna rivers.
In this connection a rally was held at Picture Palace crossing of the city with GKDACC president Ashrafuzzaman in the chair. Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Mayor Moniruzzaman and others spoke in the rally.
