RANGPUR, Sept 13 (BSS): Speakers said at daylong workshop have stressed for creating adequate social awareness and comprehensive efforts of all to eradicate child marriage, dowry, polygamy and violence against women from the society.
They were addressing the workshop on 'Prevention of Early Marriage' organised by Fulbari Area Development Programme (ADP) of World Vision Bangladesh (WVB) at Eluari union parishad hall room under Fulbari upazila of Dinajpur on Friday.
Bangladesh Advance Students for Interrelation Council (BASIC) extended cooperation in arranging the workshop for the marriage registrars, matchmakers, Imams, Purohits, teachers, union parishad members and local community leaders.
Chairman of Eluari union parishad Nabiul Islam tended and addressed the workshop as the chief guest with locale elite Amborish Roy Chowdhury in the chair.
Project Officer of Fulbari ADP of WVB for Eluari union Lal Thoyai Bom, Executive Director of BASIC Shyamol Chandra Sarker, Resilient of Eluari Union Child Forum Armina Khatun, addressed the workshop as special guests.
Female member of Eluari union parishad Shyamoli Rani, union member Golzar Hossain, matchmaker Abdul Hamid and leader of the local ethnic community people Kamal Kisku took part in the open discussion, among others.
The speakers blamed discriminatory attitude towards female children at family levels in backward rural areas, superstitions, religious misinterpretations, eve-teasing, illiteracy, dowry, poverty and lack of awareness as the main reasons behind child marriage.
They suggested for proper implementation of the Child Marriage Prevention Act, creating social awareness.
