SYLHET, Dec 05: Speakers at an event in Sylhet said on Thursday the country's agriculture sector should focus on high value crops for ensuring food security.

Soil quality and its management should be top priority for selecting appropriate crops. Use of balanced fertiliser on appropriate soil condition would raise crop production by 25 per cent, they added.

DAE Additional Director, Sylhet division Md Shahjahan attended the event as the chief guest and Dr Enayetullah, Chief Scientific officer of Soil Research Institute's Regional Centre, presided.

The event was organised in observance of the World Soil Day with the initiative of FAO. This year's slogan is 'Stop soil erosion, Save our future'.

About 60 selected farmers were later imparted daylong training on different aspects of soil quality and its management alongside ways to detect adulterated fertilizer etc.

The speakers said farmers should be aware of the importance of maintaining soil health for better crops.

The chief guest said, "We have already achieved huge success in food production. We now need to put emphasis for high-value and nutritious crops. We need to produce high-value crops at low cost."

"Farmers need to be familiar with technology-friendly agriculture, he further said.

Besides, the common farmers need regular counseling and monitoring from DAE in regard to managing soil condition and its health. Regular monitoring and use of required advice on soil management should be made priority for ensuring best use of land, speakers said.

The speakers said the total approach to the root level people should have a positive change towards the various aspects of modern agriculture. Use of modern tools is important as use of manual labour in traditional agriculture is on decline.
