Aman harvest starts amid labour crisis in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Nov 18: Harvesting of transplanted Aman has just started in Nilphamari district amidst acute labour shortage. Labour shortage has been created as huge number of labourers of the district has shifted their workplace to the southern districts of Jaipurhat, Rajshahi and Natore where harvesting of crop has started earlier and to be completed shortly.
Remuneration of farm labour has gone up this year as number of labourers is decreasing year on year. At present per day remuneration of a farm laboures is Tk 300 which was Tk 200 last year.
While contacted Obinash a very small farmer of Borovita UP of kishorgonj Upazila said he posseses only one acre of land where he cultivated Aman but due to shortage of labourers he alone is doing the job.
While contacted Abdul Jabbar a farm labourer of Itakhola UP of sadar upazilla said he returned home from Natore yesterday after working there where he worked in harvesting of Aman on contract basis and earned Tk 6000, in 10 days, excluding his expenses for food and travelling.
