GOPALGANJ, Feb 22: 'Amar Ekushey' the Language Martyrs Day and International Mother Language Day was celebrated in Gopalganj with a befitting manner yesterday (Friday).
Probhat Ferry, wearing black badge, discussion meetings, cultural functions, recitation of poems, hand writing and essay competition, patriotic song and book fair marked the occasion.
The celebration began at 00.01am with Md. Khalilur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (D.C), Gopalganj placing floral wreath at Central Shaheed Minar.
Later Md. Mizanur Rahman, S.P., Gopalganj, political party members, press club freedom fighters and others placed wreaths and paid tributes to the martyrs of great language movement.
Other programmes included hoisting of national flag at half-mast atop all government, semi government, private and commercial buildings and educational institutions on the occasion.
Besides, special prayers were also offered in mosques, temples and churches in the district seeking the blessing of Almighty Allah for the salvation of the departed souls of the language heroes.
Rajshahi University
Our RU Correspondent reports: The International Mother Language Day and Ekushey February was observed at the Rajshahi University (RU) Friday through paying tribute to the language martyrs.
To commemorate the national red letter day the RU authority chalked out a day long programme including hoisting of flag, mourning procession, placing wreath, discussion, offering special prayer and cultural function.
The Vice Chancellor Prof. Muhammed Mizan Uddin, along with Pro-VC Prof. Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan Sajol, Treasurer Prof Sayen Uddin and other officials of the university placed wreath at first hour 12.01 am on 21st February on central Shaheed Minar of the university and kept silence for one minute.
Besides Rajshahi University Teachers Association (RUTA), Officers Association, RU Transportation Employees Association and RU Alumni Association placed wreaths to honour the martyred language veteran.
Among others programmes of the day included hoisting of national flag at half mast at every academic, administrative building and dormitories at sunrise and the dormitories of the university took out morning procession at 7.00 am with colourful badges, flags, festoons and placing of garlands on top of the central Shaheed Minar.
RU VC at 09.30 am inaugurated an art and Bangla handwriting competition of the school-going children at the foot of university Martyrs' Memorial Museum.
Tangail
Our Correspondent in Tangail reports: Amar Ekushey and international Mother Language Day was observed here in Tangail in a befitting manner Friday recalling the sacrifice of the martyrs of 21 February in 1952 language movement.
In observance of the day the district administration, different political parties, Tangail Pourushava, Tangail Press Club, educational institution, cultural organisation, NGOs and different classes of people of the district paid their deep respect for the martyrs.
The days programmed began through placing floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar at mid night, including hoisting of national flag at half mast atop all the government, private, educational institution and commercial building.
