Artisans become self-reliant by selling bamboo fishing gear

NILPHAMARI, July 03: With the advent of monsoon some poor residents of the district have become busy in producing and selling bamboo fishing gear.

Fishing equipments making and selling are the main source of income for thousands of poor villagers in the rainy season.

A particular section of poor artisans use to make so many kinds of artistic fishing traps in their homes and sell those in the markets.

They earn a handsome amount of money during these days.

These artisans those make fishing equipment are to be found in all the 60 union councils of six upazila of the district.

They become self-reliant by earning money with fishing trap making.

Different types of fishing equipment of different sizes are being sold in the markets of the villages and each of them earns more than Tk 10,000 per month as they themselves make and sell those in the market.

Price of a fishing trap varies between Tk 500 to 1,500 according to its size and type.

Most of the villagers catch fish for their own consumption and a section of fisherman sell fish in the markets that they catch in the locality.

Isamuddin, a resident of Ithakola union under Sadar upazila said he catches fish to sale in the market.

He earns up to Tk 1,500 per day by catching fish with the bamboo fishing gear.
