NARSINGDI, Jan 20 (BSS): Discussants at a meeting yesterday stressed for creating awareness among fish-traders and fishermen for ensuring supply of formalin-free fish in local markets to save people from deadly diseases.
They were addressing an awareness building meeting organised by Sadar Upazila Fisheries Department with the assistance of District Fisheries Department as a part of their six month long continuing awareness meeting for stopping uses of formalin in fish at Shakerchar Bazar under Sadar upazila of the district.
District Fisheries Officer Chowdhury Mohammad Abul Farah addressed the meeting as the chief guest while Assistant Fisheries Officer Dipali Rani attended as the special guest with Sadar Upazila Fisheries officer Shahajada Khusru in the chair.
Thirty-five fish traders and fishermen, upazila level officials, leaders of different business organisations, common traders, professionals, civil society members, socio-cultural activists, community leaders and elites participated in the meeting.
The speakers talked about the harmful effects of using formalin and other chemicals while preserving fish before marketing those in the local market putting the common people under severe threat of many deadly diseases including cancer.
They called upon the local fish traders and fishermen to refrain from using formalin and urged their community leaders and consumers to work unitedly for ensuring supply of formalin free fish to the local markets.
People particularly children are being affected with long and short term bad affects in their bodies including important organs like kidney and heart for taking poison mixed fish, they also said.
