RANGPUR, Apr 25: Production of bamboo is decreasing gradually in all the eight upazilas in Rangpur district due to indiscriminate cutting of the construction material and lack of initiatives to enhance its growth.
As a construction material the demand for bamboo is still high. It is essential for the construction of huts and building, fencing of houses and boundary walls of vegetables gardens, sources said.
It is alleged that a huge number of bamboos is cut from the clusters everyday without any efforts to replenish them. Bamboo requires care for its proper growth. But villagers take little interest for the growth of bamboo in the clusters.
The clusters usually grow under the natural condition. Though bamboo cultivation is lucrative, well organised efforts for its healthy growth are lacking every where in different areas under the district.
A large number of bamboos are sold in the district and other parts of the country everyday. The buyers from Dhaka and other districts come to Rangpur to buy huge quantity of bamboo, sources said.
