BARI-4 seasam cultivation gets popular in Magura

MAGURA, June 08: BARI-4 seasam cultivation is gaining popularity in the district due to its high yield and price and low production cost.

Agriculture office sources have said farmers are interested in cultivating BARI-4 seasam due to high production, low cost and short duration.

"Day by day, the cultivation of the seasam variety is increasing in the district," many a farmer said.

BARI-4 seasam production is 1.4 to 1.5 tonne per hectare of land against 01 tonne of local variety, said sources at the regional spice research centre in Magura.

Moreover, the production duration of BARI-4 seasam is only 85 to 90 days as against 115 to 120 days in local variety, they added.

BARI-4 seasam requires less irrigation compared to that in common variety. The variety is low vulnerable to diseases and insect attack.

Local farmers are showing high interest in BARI-4 seasam variety. A total of 430 hectares land has been brought into BARI-4 seasam cultivation this season.

Totan Vattacharga, a farmer of village AtharaKhada under Magura Sadar Upazila, said, "This year I've brought 03 bigha of land into BARI-4 seasam cultivation and I've got 17 maunds of seasam."

"I've sold my seasam at Tk 60,000 while its production cost was only Tk 15,000. I've got profit of Tk 45,000."

Another farmer, Volantah, of village Harakrishnapur under Mohammadpur upazila of Magura, said "This year I've brought 02 bigha of land into BARI- 4 seasam cultivation."

"In the meantime, I've cultivated jute in my land after harvesting seasam. BARI-4 seasam is a short duration crop. We can easily produce three times crop in a land a year by cultivating this variety."

When contacted, Shafiqur Rahman, an agriculturist and executive director Palli Prokriti, said, "BARI-4 seasam requires less irrigation. Moreover, we can make our land 03 crop- producing with cultivating this short-duration crop BARI-4 seasam."

When asked, Md Riazul Islam, a scientific officer in Magura regional spice research centre, said BARI-4 seasam cultivation is profitable as it requires less irrigation and is eco-friendly.

Local farmers are finding BARI-4 seasam cultivation as a cash crop in a short time.
