Bari 7 moshur ushers in new hope among Magura farmers

MAGURA, Mar 5: Newly developed Bari 7 moshur (Lentil) has ushered in a new hope among the farmers in Magura.

Magura sadar upazila Agriculture Officer Shubrata Chattergy informed, Moshur is actually a winter crop. But Bari 7 moshur can be cultivated throughout the year.

The crop is more healthy and high productive compared to common variety. Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute deserves the credit for developing Bari 7 moshur.

Bari 7 moshur is enriched with high iron and zinc. Consequently it provides the consumers with high protein. On the other hand, production of Bari 7 moshur is 9 to 10 maund per bigha as against 5 to 6 maunds of common variety.

The annual demand for moshur is 4 million (40 lakh) tonnes in the country while our domestic production is only one million tonnes.

Mr Shubrata said, "If cultivation of Bari 7 gains popularity, we shall be able to reduce the import of moshur".

A total of 10 bighas of land were brought under Bari 7 cultivation in the district on experimental basis this season. The production of moshur has stood at 90 maunds. We are providing farmers with training and seeds to spread the cultivation of Bari 7 moshur, he added.
