Betel leaf growers see an impressive production in Chuadanga

CHUADANGA, May 17: Farmers of four upazilas in Chuadanga district achieved an abundant production of betel leaf and have become financially solvent and changed their lot. The favourable climate condition and timely supply of agro -- inputs and technical supports from the local DAE official helped the farmers to achieve the success.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources said 3001 acres of land were brought under betel leaf cultivation in the district.
The farmers of four upazilas in the district are happy as they getting handsome price by selling it in the local markets.
Per poan (80 pieces) betel leaf is being sold at Tk 40 to Tk 50 against Tk 25 in the last year in local market.
"I cultivated betel leaf on my one bigha of land spending Tk 22000. I am earning Tk 3000 to 4000 per week by selling betel leaf in the local markets," said Siful Islam, a betel leaf farmer of Dawlat Dier village under Chuadanga Sadar Upazila.
Deputy Director of DAE Chuadanga Mr Haribula Sarkar said, betel leaf is very important cash crop in the district and farmers of the district can earn money by cultivating the crop. Bangladesh can get huge amount of foreign currency through exporting betel leaf in abroad.
