BINA-9, BARI-11 groundnut farming gains popularity in Gopalganj

GOPALGANJ, May 14: The cultivation of BINA-9 and BARI-11 groundnut varieties is gaining popularity among farmers of the district.

Farmers say that the groundnut varieties are profitable crops for farmers in this region.

According to Bangladesh Institution of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) and Bangladesh Agriculture Recharge Institute (BARI), 413 hectares of land have been brought into BINA groundnut cultivation in five upazilas of the district.

The production target of 1,250 tonnes has been fixed and about 3,000 farmers were involved in the groundnut farming.

Sures Biswas, 55 of village Boilatali under Baulatoli union of Sadar upazila, said he cultivated BINA-9 groundnut on two bighas of land this year at a cost of Tk 50,000.

"If the weather condition remains favourable, I will get about 26 mounds of groundnut from my field which market price is about Tk 115,000."

Ratan Adhikari, sub-assistant agriculture officer (SAAO), Boitali union block No-4 under Gopalganj Sadar Upazila, said 135 hectares of land have been brought into BINA-9 & RARI-11 groundnut cultivation.

Animesh Biswas, a groundnut farmer of village Boiltali under Sadar upazila, said he cultivated groundnut origin "BARI-11" on 55 decimal of land (local one bigha) this year at a cost of Tk 25,000.

"I will get about 13 mounds of groundnut from my field, which market price is Tk 58,000."

Sulekha Bala, Sub-Assistant Agriculture officer (SAAO) at Karpara union, said 40 hectares of land have been brought into groundnut cultivation this year.

About 350 to 400 farmers were engaged in groundnut farming.

Biplob Mollah, 42, a farmer of village Kongshoor under Korpara union, said he cultivated groundnut origin "BINA-9" on local five bighas (270 decimal) of land "If climate remains favourable, I will get 60 mounds of groundnut which market price is about Tk 264,000."

Dr Md. Harun-or-Rashid, principal scientific officer and officer in change at BINA substation in Gopalganj, told the FE that BINA-9 groundnut is more profitable cash crop for farmers in this region. They are more interested in this farming.

Some farmers of Manikhar village under Urfi union in Sadar upazila said they are being benefited from this BINA groundnut cultivation.
