BOGRA, Dec 28: A good number of peasants in the district are making good profit by cultivating spinach this season for good market price and a bumper production.
Most of the farmers of Dupchanchia, Kahloo, Adamdighi, Sherpur, Sonatola, Sariakandi, Gabtoly, Shajanpur, Shibganj, Nandiram, Dhunot and Sadar upazilas start harvesting the leafy vegetable and selling it in the kitchen market.
"The farmers have started harvesting the crop from the first week of December and it will continue till February," said sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman.
Each kg of the fresh vegetable is being sold at Tk 22 to Tk 25 in the retail market while the wholesale rate is Tk 18 to Tk 20. Wholesalers across the country visit the area regularly to purchase the vegetable directly from the farmers.
"I have brought around 0.23 acre of land under spinach cultivation spending Tk 4,000," said farmer Anukul Chadra Barmon of Kahaloo upazila.
He again said, "I have already sold some ten maunds of the vegetable till December 25 with Tk 8,000 and expecting to make around Tk 6,000 selling rest of the crops."
The farmers have shown more interest to cultivate the winter delicacy abundantly across the district including the riverbeds of Jamuna, Nagor and Bangalee rivers.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), farmers have brought over 1,290 hectares of land under spinach cultivation this season and are earning a good amount of money. Marginal growers were provided all necessary support from the department to achieve a good production of the popular vegetable.
