BOGURA, Nov 03: The farmers of all twelve upazilas of Bogura district are passing busy time taking care of their chilli fields as a prospect of good profit from the crop is beckoning them this season.
High market price of the spice is bringing smile on the farmers of the district.
Each kilogram of newly harvested chilli is being sold at Tk100 to 120 in the retail markets while its wholesale market price ranges from Tk 80 to 90.
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) official sources said farmers of all twelve upazilas have cultivated chilli on around 1,450 hectares of land in the current season for achieving self-reliance.
They expect to get a satisfactory market price growing indigenous and hybrid verities of the spice with the assistance of local agriculture offices across the district, added the DAE sources.
Farmers said they had counted huge losses last year cultivating chilli as the weather condition was quite unfavourable for the spice.
But now the weather is fully favourable raising the hope of a bumper yield.
Generally wholesalers from different districts visit local kitchen markets here to purchase chilli every season, said farmer Golzar Hossain of Shibganj upazila of the district.
Farmer Saifur Rahman at Tarajun village under Dupchanchia upazila said, "I have cultivated chilli on 20 decimals of land in the beginning of September spending Tk 15,000."
Deputy Director of DAE, Bogura Dulal Hossain said the price of chill at the growers' level remains high and the farmers are optimistic that they could make a good profit.
The DAE has provided the farmers with necessary agri inputs and arranged a training programme for them eying a bumper production, he added.
