BOGURA, Dec 24: Grassroots onion growers in the district are hopeful of getting a good yield this season.
Sources said onion plants are growing well on the field across the district amid suitable weather condition.
After the harvest of the early planted T-Aman, peasants started farming the spice crop on a vast tract of land, sub-assistance agriculture officer of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Faridur Rahman said.
The official said some growers will start harvesting their produce within a few days.
An onion cultivator can earn over Tk 30,000 to Tk 40,000 from a bigha of land.
According to the officials at the DAE, onion cultivation is expanding in the district as many government and non-government organisations are jointly take adequate steps to make the farming a success.
Ahsanul Haque of Shibganj upazila said he is growing onion on 35 decimals of land this season spending Tk 12,000 and expecting to make over Tk 20,000 profit.
To grow onion on a bigha of land a farmer usually spends Tk 14,000 to Tk 15,000 and makes over Tk 50,000 to Tk 70,000 if the market prices remain stable.
"I made over Tk 40,000 from onion grown on 23 decimal of land last year as the market price was between Tk 40 and Tk 50," said farmer Jalal Uddin of Sadar upazila.
The grower said he is growing the item on 30 decimals of land this season and expecting 44 maunds of onion.
DAE has set a target of producing around 1,000 tonnes of onion from over 900 hectares of land this season, sources added.
The department provided all support in this connection so that the growers can get their desire output.
